12 Sophie was new at the school before, so she remembers how scary it was. The text says "I remember when I was new here—it was so scary!"
13 At first Maya felt worried and expected to be ignored. By the end, she felt hopeful and thought "this new school wouldn't be so bad after all."
14 Readers would NOT know what Sophie was thinking. We wouldn't know that Sophie remembered being new or that she decided to help Maya. We would only know Maya's thoughts.

Questions 9-10 Scoring Rubric

Score Criteria
2 Response clearly explains the difference AND uses specific text evidence to support the answer
1 Response explains the difference OR provides text evidence, but not both; or partially correct
0 Incorrect or off-topic response; no understanding demonstrated
Sample 2-Point Response for Question 9:
If the story were told from Marcus's first-person point of view, the reader would experience the game through his eyes. We would hear his frustration more directly, like "I was wide open but Jayden didn't pass to me!" We would NOT know what Jayden's mom or Coach Torres were thinking because Marcus can't read their minds. The story would focus more on Marcus's disappointment and less on Jayden's excitement.
Sample 2-Point Response for Question 10:
Characters: Jayden and Marcus
How their perspectives are different: Jayden is excited about scoring the goal and runs to his mom with a "huge smile." Marcus is frustrated because he was open and Jayden didn't pass to him. Marcus thinks "He never passes to anyone" and leaves without saying goodbye. While Jayden sees the goal as a great moment, Marcus sees it as proof that Jayden is selfish.
