Comparing & Equivalent Fractions

Compare fractions with same numerator or denominator, and identify equivalent fractions using visual models

FL B.E.S.T. Standards: MA.3.FR.2.1, MA.3.FR.2.2
Back to Grade 3

What Students Will Learn

Students develop understanding of fraction comparison by reasoning about the size of pieces. They learn that fractions with the same denominator can be compared by counting pieces, while fractions with the same numerator require comparing piece sizes. Students also identify and explain equivalent fractions using visual models and number lines.

MA.3.FR.2.1: Plot, order, and compare fractions with same numerator or denominator
MA.3.FR.2.2: Identify equivalent fractions and explain why they are equivalent
Denominators: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12
Key Concept: Larger denominator = smaller pieces
