A fun 10-minute activity to do with your child!
Your child is learning about fractions on a number line in math class. This is an important skill for the Florida FAST test. Below are simple activities you can do at home to help your child succeed. No math expertise needed!
Write 0 on the left end of the paper strip and 1 on the right end. Tell your child: "This strip represents one whole."
Fold the strip in half. Open it up and mark the fold line. Ask: "How many equal parts do we have now?" (2) "What fraction is this line?" (1/2)
Fold the strip in half again (so it's in fourths). Open and mark the new fold lines. Ask: "Now how many equal parts?" (4) "What are these fractions?" (1/4, 2/4, 3/4)
Point to different marks and have your child name the fraction. Then say a fraction and have your child point to it!
"Count the SPACES, not the lines. The spaces tell us the bottom number (denominator). Counting from 0 tells us the top number (numerator)."
Gather your measuring cups. Lay them out from smallest to largest. Ask: "Which cup holds the least? Which holds the most?"
Ask: "If 1/4 cup is smaller than 1/2 cup, what does that tell us about fractions with bigger bottom numbers?" (They're smaller pieces!)
Fill the 1/4 cup with water. Pour it into the 1 cup measure. Ask: "How many times would we need to fill the 1/4 cup to reach 1 whole cup?" (4 times)
"When we cook, we use fractions all the time! The number line helps us see how fractions compare - just like our measuring cups!"
Just 10 minutes of practice at home can make a big impact on your child's confidence and success. Thank you for being part of their learning journey!
