I noticed her the moment she walked into Mr. Chen's classroom. Her backpack looked brand new, and she clutched her schedule like it was a life raft. I remembered that feeling from when we moved here two years ago. Everyone stared at me like I was some kind of alien, and I promised myself I would never make another new kid feel that way.
Mr. Chen introduced her as Sofia and pointed to the empty seat next to mine. As she sat down, I could see her hands trembling slightly. I wanted to tell her that middle school seems terrifying at first, but it gets easier. I wanted to say that the cafeteria food isn't as bad as it looks, and that the eighth graders aren't as scary as they seem.
Instead, I just smiled and whispered, "I'm Maya. If you get lost, just look for the giant mural by the gym. Everything is near there." Sofia's shoulders relaxed a tiny bit, and she smiled back.
I don't know what Sofia was thinking in that moment, whether she felt relieved or still terrified. But I knew exactly what I would have wanted to hear on my first day: that someone noticed me and wanted to help.
