Word choice refers to the specific words an author selects to convey meaning. Tone is the author's attitude toward the subject, while mood is the feeling created for the reader. Fifth graders are expected to analyze how an author's word choices affect the meaning and feeling of a text.
On Florida's FAST assessment, students must identify tone, explain why authors chose specific words, and understand how different word choices create different effects.

Help your child notice word choice in everyday life - advertisements ("amazing deal" vs. "good price"), restaurant menus ("hand-crafted" vs. "made"), and even the way friends text. Understanding that people choose words carefully helps students become better readers AND writers!
