Question Answer
1 Nina is a DYNAMIC character because she changes from dismissive and controlling ("I'll handle the research") to open-minded and collaborative ("Your ideas made this project way more interesting").
2 At the beginning, Nina is motivated by control and perfectionism. She wants to do everything herself because "other people never met her standards."
3 Working with Alex and discovering his brilliant idea about music and plant growth. She realized "For the first time, Nina didn't have all the answers."
4 C. "Your ideas made this project way more interesting than anything I would have done by myself."
This quote shows Nina acknowledging that collaboration improves outcomes - a major change from her controlling attitude at the beginning.
5 Nina learns that different perspectives strengthen work rather than threaten it. She discovers that collaboration can lead to better results than working alone, even when she has to give up control.

Question Answer
1 Marco is motivated by winning and glory. He picks the best players because "strong players meant more wins, and wins meant glory."
2 A. He goes from seeing Jaylen as weak to recognizing his strategic intelligence.
3 Ms. Rodriguez's new rule that captains must explain their choices forced Marco to think about Jaylen. When he looked more closely, he noticed Jaylen's smart positioning and realized he had been missing quiet strength.
4 "Jaylen, because he's smart about positioning" or "Same team next week?" Both show Marco now values Jaylen and wants to continue working with him.
5 Marco is a DYNAMIC character. He changes from only valuing obvious strength ("never thought twice about leaving him standing") to recognizing hidden abilities ("He'd been so focused on obvious strength that he'd missed the quiet strategy"). He asks Jaylen to be on his team again, showing his values have changed.
6 At the beginning, Lily values technical perfection ("every note precise, every tempo exact"). By the end, she values emotional expression and authentic connection ("She would play not just with her fingers, but with her heart").
7 C. "She'd spent so long being perfect that she'd forgotten to feel anything at all."
This shows Lily's internal realization about what she was missing - key character development.
8 Sofia's performance shows Lily what music can be when it comes from authentic emotion. Even though Sofia made technical mistakes, her playing moved the audience in a way Lily's perfect performance couldn't. This forces Lily to reconsider what makes music meaningful.
9 The contrast reveals that technical perfection alone doesn't create meaningful art. The "thundered" applause for Sofia shows the audience connected emotionally with her imperfect but heartfelt performance, while "polite" applause for Lily shows respect without emotional impact. Lily realizes she needs both skill AND feeling.
10 Kenji responds with anger and bitterness ("stormed out," "refused to speak," said "it was pointless"). This reveals he gives up when things don't go his way. Anaya responds with initiative and creativity (called friends, created an alternative plan). This reveals she is resourceful and solution-oriented. Same challenge, different character traits lead to different outcomes.
11 C. Kenji is static because he remains bitter; Anaya is dynamic because she transforms her disappointment into action.
Kenji stays the same (bitter, refusing to participate). Anaya grows and finds a new path.
12 Kenji refuses to participate because he is still bitter about the original cancellation. His pride and disappointment prevent him from moving forward with a different solution than what he originally wanted.
13 Kenji has learned that his bitterness cost him an opportunity, while Anaya's initiative created one. He feels regret for not participating and admiration for Anaya's ability to find another way. He's beginning to understand that his response to setbacks matters more than the setbacks themselves.
14 Both Lily and Anaya face disappointment but respond actively. Lily realizes her approach to music needs to change and decides to "play with her heart." Anaya realizes the cancelled play isn't the end and creates her own opportunity. Both are dynamic because they CHOOSE to grow and change rather than staying stuck. They show that challenges can lead to positive transformation when we're willing to adapt.

Question 9 Scoring Rubric (STEAL Method)

Score Criteria
2 Correctly identifies TWO STEAL elements, provides specific evidence for each, AND explains how both reveal character development
1 Identifies two elements but with weak evidence or explanation, OR thoroughly discusses only one element
0 Does not correctly use STEAL method, provides no evidence, or response does not address character development
Sample 2-Point Response for Question 9:
Tara's character is revealed through SPEECH and ACTIONS. Her speech changes from "I didn't ask for this" at the beginning (showing resentment and resistance) to "helping something grow, knowing it matters to someone - this is better" at the end (showing she now values meaningful work). Her actions also show development: at first she was "yanking weeds aggressively, counting the minutes until she could leave," but later she "started arriving early, not because she had to" and was "teaching a younger volunteer." Both elements show Tara transforming from resentful and self-focused to caring and engaged.

Question 10 Scoring Rubric (Theme Connection)

Score Criteria
2 Correctly identifies what BOTH characters learn, provides evidence for each, AND connects their development to a common theme
1 Addresses what characters learn but only discusses one character well OR fails to connect to a theme
0 Does not identify character lessons, provides no evidence, or response is off-topic
Sample 2-Point Response for Question 10:
Tara learns that meaningful work that helps others is more fulfilling than doing nothing. She goes from wanting "absolutely nothing" to realizing that "helping something grow, knowing it matters to someone - this is better." Damon learns that winning isn't everything and that how he handles losing reveals his true character. He goes from refusing to shake Amira's hand to apologizing and asking to learn from her. Both characters share a common theme: true personal growth comes from looking beyond yourself. Tara grows when she sees the garden helps families beyond herself. Damon grows when he realizes being a good person matters more than being undefeated.
