The Last Cookie

Emma and her little brother Max both spotted the last chocolate chip cookie on the plate at the same time.

"That cookie should be mine," said Emma. "I'm older, and I've been waiting all day for a treat. I had a really hard spelling test, and I deserve something sweet."

"But I want it!" Max cried. "Emma always gets everything first because she's bigger. It's not fair! I cleaned up all my toys today without being asked. I should get a reward."

Their mother walked into the kitchen and saw them arguing. She picked up the cookie and broke it in half.

"There," Mom said with a smile. "Now you each have half. Emma, you worked hard on your test. Max, you were very responsible today. You both earned a treat."

Emma looked at her half and felt a little silly for arguing. Max grinned and said, "Thanks, Mom! Half a cookie is still pretty good."

The two children sat down together to enjoy their snack. Emma had to agree - sharing wasn't so bad after all.
