IXL Skills: Identify the narrator's point of view; Analyze how point of view affects the story
/4
Directions: Read the passage below carefully. Then answer the questions that follow. Pay attention to whose perspective the story is told from and how this affects what the reader knows.
Two Sides of the Story

Jordan's Perspective:

I saw Kenji standing alone by the lockers after school, looking at his phone. He didn't even say hi when I walked past. Just kept scrolling, ignoring me completely. Classic Kenji, I thought. Ever since he got into the honors program, he's been too good for his old friends. I felt my jaw tighten as I pushed through the doors into the cold afternoon air.

Kenji's Perspective:

I stood frozen by my locker, staring at my phone screen. The message from Mom glowed: "Grandpa's in the hospital. Come straight home." My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone. I vaguely noticed Jordan walk by, but I couldn't look up. If I made eye contact with anyone, I knew I'd start crying. I just needed to hold it together until I got home.

The Next Day:

Jordan approached Kenji's desk before class. "Hey, I heard about your grandfather. I'm really sorry."

Kenji looked up, surprised. "How did you know?"

"Your mom told my mom. She said you've been at the hospital every day." Jordan paused, guilt washing over him. "I thought... yesterday when you didn't say hi... I thought you were ignoring me on purpose."

"I wasn't ignoring you," Kenji said quietly. "I just couldn't talk to anyone right then."

Jordan sat down beside his friend. "I'm sorry I assumed the worst. I should have asked if you were okay instead of just walking away mad."

Answer Key (Teacher Reference)

Question 1 Part A: D - It reveals how limited perspective can lead to misunderstandings.
The dual perspectives show how Jordan misinterprets Kenji's behavior because he doesn't have access to Kenji's internal experience.
Question 1 Part B: A - Jordan interprets Kenji's behavior as arrogance when Kenji is actually dealing with a family emergency.
This directly shows the misunderstanding caused by limited perspective.
Question 2 Part A: B - It allows the reader to observe both characters interacting and resolving their conflict.
The third-person view lets us see both characters equally as they reconcile.
Question 2 Part B: C - "Jordan sat down beside his friend."
This action shows the resolution of their conflict through physical proximity, observable in third person.
